Man, the Higher Species?
They are beautiful, are they not? These butterflies are encased in the lobby of the La Reserve Hotel in Switzerland. Each one is so different, intricate and magnificent.
Yet, there is a great irony between these delicate creatures and man. Man claims he has the higher powers than other species.
Who tells the butterflies where they may fly? Have squirrels ever had to pay a membership to play at the fountain of the Ritz Carlton Hotel? Do fish need to renew their licenses to dwell in the sea?
Man, created in God's image - as one who is to rule over God's lesser creations? Interesting. This same man trapped by his own bonds. We are not free.
Why did God create us? So we can enslave ourselves? So, we can enslave others?
It is all an illusion - a false belief that man is free and wields a higher power. Man is less free than the caged bird.
The butterflies, lack the strength and cunning to overpower man - yet, man in all his strength, power and glory have little understanding.
He creates his own invisible cage and the key hangs within reach on the handle.
Please, can anyone tell me exactly what it is it that terrifies man of freedom?
I believe it's choice. Man is terrified to take the responsibility for making the choice because once he chooses, he has commited to the implications that his choice brings. He is commited to seeing his weakness, his powerlessness and his great need. The illusion, I agree, is in the perception that we can handle everything that comes our way, that somehow we make decisions that do not affect others, and that 'freedom' represents a total disconnect from the consequences of our actions. The 'illusion' also is that true freedom, as in the life of the butterfly, occurs when their is a death to the old ways of selfishness, and an immersion into Gods' higher call.
